Real Madrid 0 Real Betis 1: Ronaldo's return ruined as Sanabria stuns LaLiga champions

Image
An injury-time header from Antonio Sanabria saw Real Betis snatch a dramatic 1-0 victory away to Real Madrid. Real Madrid suffered a shock 1-0 loss to Real Betis as Cristiano Ronaldo endured a frustrating LaLiga return on Wednesday. Antonio Sanabria headed in a dramatic 94th-minute winner for Betis, who were victorious at the Santiago Bernabeu in a league game for the first time since 1998. Making his first Liga appearance of the season after serving a five-match domestic ban, Ronaldo was unable to have the same impact he did a week ago when he netted a brace against APOEL in the Champions League. The Portuguese star tried hard and had numerous attempts on goal, but Madrid failed to score for the first time since April 2016. The result ended a record-equalling run of 73 games in which Madrid had netted as Zinedine Zidane's men were left seven points behind rivals and league leaders Barcelona. Zidane made three changes to the starting XI that helped Madr

Leroy Sane scored a goal in each half as City edged a tense Carabao Cup tie 2-1 over West Brom.

City had dominated the opening period with a sparkling display of attacking football, but paid for missed opportunities as the Baggies fought their way back into the tie after the break - before Sane struck a superb second of the evening late on. The Blues go into the last 16 of the competition as a result, there will be concern for Ilkay Gundogan who limped off after a heavy challenge with an hour played. What happened? City may have made eight changes from the side that beat Watford so convincingly at the weekend, but the starting XI at The Hawthorns looked just as slick as the one that finished at Vicarage Road. The Blues knocked the ball around for fully three minutes, making 54 touches before West Brom’s Ben Foster parried a shot from Ilkay Gundogan and Sane lashed home the rebound from close range. It was an incredible start to the game yet fully deserved for a City side oozing confidence. With skipper Yaya Toure’s calming influence in midfield, Gundogan l

Manchester United 4 Burton Albion 1

MATCH SUMMARY Manchester United began the defence of the League Cup with a comprehensive 4-1 win over Championship strugglers Burton Albion. Marcus Rashford netted an early double and Jesse Lingard scored to put United three goals to the good at the break, before Anthony Martial slotted home on the hour mark to complete the rout, though Lloyd Dyer netted a late consolation strike for the visitors. The Reds flew out of the blocks and Rashford was on hand to open the scoring after just five minutes. After being found in acres of space following Lingard's flick-on, the England striker was able to clip past Connor Ripley in the Burton goal. United broke again just moments after the opener and, had it not been for Ben Turner's sliding block, Lingard would have doubled his side's lead. However, it did not take long for the Reds to extend the advantage as, after a brief period of possession, Rashford picked up Daley Blind's pass, turned away from his ma

Coach who called Neymar a monster backs him in penalty row: He's just trying to be like Messi!

The PSG star argued with Edinson Cavani over set-piece duties, and has now been backed by a coach who previously labelled him a "monster" The manager who called Neymar a “monster” during his time in Brazil has backed him in his penalty row with Edinson Cavani. The two PSG stars initially clashed over a second-half free-kick, with Cavani wishing to take the set play. Dani Alves, however, snatched the ball away and gave it to his Brazil team-mate. And, later in the game, Cavani insisted on taking a penalty, which was saved, to the chagrin of Neymar, and reports claimed that the pair had to be separated in the dressing room. A similar situation arose in 2010 with Neymar at Santos. The winger had won a penalty against Atletico Goianiense after some skilful play and demanded to take the spot-kick, only for coach Dorival Junior to tell him that he wanted a more experienced player to take it. Neymar shrugged, dropped the ball to the floor, walked away — and

United team news for Burton cup tie

Axel Tuanzebe is set to miss Manchester United's Carabao Cup tie with Burton Albion and  Reds manager Jose Mourinho has revealed four players have been rested ahead of Wednesday's clash at Old Trafford. Promising teenager Tuanzebe is out with a back problem, while David De Gea, Antonio Valencia, Eric Bailly and Nemanja Matic will be handed a night off. "I gave two days off only to four players," revealed the boss. "Apart from that, everybody is selected. Do you want to know which four? De Gea, Valencia, Matic and Bailly." When asked if he is taking the competition, which the Reds won last season with a 3-2 triumph over Southampton at Wembley, seriously, he replied: "Oh, yes. Serious. Because it's football, it's competition. We take it seriously. "Of course, we're not playing David or Bailly but, if we go to the next round, probably these guys will play and I will give a rest to others. Our squad is good. "We

Mourinho: Matic and Fellaini in best-ever form

Image
Jose Mourinho has praised the form of Nemanja Matic and Marouane Fellaini, claiming the two Manchester United midfielders are currently playing the best football of their careers so far.  Matic has been outstanding for the Reds since arriving from Mourinho's former club Chelsea during the summer, while Fellaini has made an excellent impact when starting or appearing as a substitute in recent weeks. The boss has been so impressed by the duo that they have largely kept club captain Michael Carrick and last season's Sir Matt Busby Player of the Year, Ander Herrera, out of the team during the Reds' fine start to the campaign.   Speaking after United's 4-0 win over Everton on Sunday, Mourinho said: “[Sergio] Romero played the Europa League final, which was the game of the season for us, and he is not playing now. Herrera was Player of the Season and he is not starting matches. You know, that’s life at big clubs. “We gave Michael Carrick a contract because w

Leicester City 2 Liverpool 0: Okazaki, Slimani dump Klopp's men out of EFL Cup

Jurgen Klopp's Liverpool are still yet to win in September after Leicester City prevailed 2-0 in Tuesday's EFL Cup third-round clash. Liverpool's EFL Cup campaign came to an early end as second-half goals from Shinji Okazaki and Islam Slimani gave Leicester City a 2-0 win at the King Power Stadium on Tuesday. Substitute Okazki - on in place of the injured Leonardo Ulloa - was in the right place to pick up a loose ball inside the penalty area to break the deadlock in the 65th minute. Strike partner Slimani settled the third-round tie in style 13 minutes later, sending a left-footed drive flashing beyond goalkeeper Danny Ward to get his third goal in the competition this season. The result means Liverpool - beaten finalists in 2016 - are still yet to record a win in September, a worrying four-game rut they will hope to stop on Saturday when the two teams meet again at the same venue in Premier League action. Jurgen Klopp's side were impress

President Buhari signs proclamation proscribing IPOB in Nigeria

Image
BABA 2019 4 REAL President Buhari has reportedly signed a presidential proclamation proscribing the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) in Nigeria. According to Thisday, President Buhari signed the proclamation on Sunday, September 17th, shortly before he left for the 72nd UN General Assembly meeting. President Buhari signed the proclamation two days after the Nigerian Army released a statement banning the activities of the group and declaring them a militant terrorist organization. With the signing of the proclamation by Buhari, a source in the attorney general’s office explained that the presidency had effectively initiated the formal process of proscribing IPOB in accordance with the provisions of the Terrorism (Prevention) Act, 2011. It also paved the way for the Attorney General of the Federation (AGF), Mr. Abubakar Malami (SAN) to head to court to give legal backing to the presidential proclamation. Section 2 (1) of the Terrorism Act states that “where tw

The 19-year-old is one of six young Englishmen nominated for the Golden Boy accolade, along with Liverpool duo Joe Gomez and Dominic Solanke, Everton’s Dominic Calvert-Lewin, West Ham defender Reece Oxford and Tottenham’s Kyle Walker-Peters, while the inclusion of Manchester City forward Gabriel Jesus means there are a total of seven Premier League players in contention. Journalists from 30 major newspapers across Europe helped put together the extensive shortlist for Italian newspaper

Manchester City obliged to win title after spending so much - Herrera

Image
The Spain international feels that the Red Devils' cross-town counterparts are now obliged to win silverware after a busy summer Manchester United midfielder Ander Herrera believes all of the pressure in the Premier League title race is on Manchester City after they spent heavily following a trophyless campaign last term. The city rivals have identical records so far this season as they sit joint-top of the table with 13 points, 16 goals scored and two conceded from five games. City's strong start to the season comes after the club spent over £200 million on new players during the close-season, with Benjamin Mendy, Bernardo Silva, Kyle Walker, Ederson and Danilo accounting for much of that expenditure. Herrera feels that City's transfer dealings make them favourites for the title and, as such, he believes the pressure is on them rather than United. "We won three titles last season [the Community Shield, League Cup and Europa League] and

Manchester United team news: Fellaini replaces Pogba for Everton clash

Image
Ronald Koeman and his team visit Old Trafford this afternoon in search for a result to turn their early failings around Marouane Fellaini starts for the first time this season in place of the injured Paul Pogba for Manchester United's clash with Everton. Romelu Lukaku also lines up against his former club, with Juan Mata also coming back into the team. Ashley Young retains his place but moves across the defence to left-back while Phil Jones and Eric Bailly return having been suspended against Basel in midweek. United have won 18 and lost just one of their last 24 Premier League home games against the Toffees, losing 0-1 in December 2013 while former Everton boss David Moyes was in charge of them. Everton, meanwhile, have Wayne Rooney leading the line on his return to Old Trafford as they look for a first win since the opening day of the Premier League season. Tom Davies looks set to start on the right-hand side of midield as Ronald Koeman starts with with

Three goals in the final seven minutes from Manchester United blew Everton away in a 4-0 win on Wayne Rooney's return to Old Trafford. Wayne Rooney's first return to Old Trafford since leaving Manchester United in the close-season ultimately ended in a 4-0 thumping thanks to three late goals, as Romelu Lukaku scored against former side Everton to heap the pressure on Ronald Koeman. United were poor for much of Sunday's Premier League match, but blew Everton away in the final stages, with Rooney – who previously missed a couple of good chances – powerless to help following his substitution in the 82nd minute. Henrikh Mkhitaryan, Romelu Lukaku and Anthony Martial all netted after Rooney's exit to condemn Everton to a fourth successive defeat in all competitions. Unsurprisingly, most of the pre-match attention was on Rooney and Lukaku, but within four minutes of kick-off Antonio Valencia had successfully made himself the man of the
