[NEWS] Debate About $1bn Terrorism Fund Totally Unnecessary – APC
The All Progress Congress (APC) has described the ongoing debate about the Federal Government’s plan to spend $1 billion dollars on fighting insurgency, as totally unnecessary.
The National Publicity Secretary of the APC, Bolaji Abdullahi said this on Monday, during an appearance on Channels Television’s Politics Today.
Mr Abdullahi said the fund also has nothing to do with politics or the party, as insinuated by some members of the opposition.
“In the first place this should not be a conversation for politics, it has nothing to do with politics. It has nothing to do with our party.
“This wouldn’t have been an issue if the PDP did not try to muddle up everything by bringing up that wild and unsubstantiated allegation,” he said.
His comments come days after the Peoples Democratic Party, criticized the move by the ruling party, describing it as alarming.
This followed the approval by governors of the 36 states, to withdraw the sum from the nation’s excess crude account.
Beyond criticising the plan, the PDP said it has rubbished the integrity of the current administration and demanded that it gives and apology to Nigerians “for lying to them about the actual state of the fight against insurgency in Nigeria”.
The party also called on the National Assembly to interrogate the proposed disbursement and subject it to a thorough but rapid interrogation.
Mr Abdullahi, however, noted that the decision was a unanimous one and that 11 governors of the PDP, were among those who approved of the sum.
Giving an instance where a former Minister of Finance was accused of taking a unilateral decision in 2015 in approving the withdrawal of $2 billion from the excess crude account, he said that was not the case in this instance.
He, therefore, called on the critics to provide evidence of a diversion of the funds, if indeed that was the case.
“It was a procedural thing that was taken at the level of the governors of the 36 states of the federation which includes 11 PDP members, so we wonder why PDP will allege that 11 of their governors, sat and supported the decision to approve 1 billion dollars for funding APC – It is that ludicrous, it is either they are suggesting that their governors are disloyal to their party or they are suggesting that somehow APC managed to bewitch those 11 governors into taking those decisions.

Defending the Federal Government’s decision to use the funds to fight insurgency, he explained that no amount can be too much in ensuring that an end is brought to the menace.
