A soldier serving in the military counter-insurgency operation “Lafiya Dole” in north-east Nigeria, has been sentenced to death for murder, by a general court martial, sitting in Maiduguri, Borno state. Other soldiers also bagged jail sentences for various offences, ranging from manslaughter to illegal possession of firearms and ammunition. Lance Corporal John Godwin, was charged for murder. He was said to have killed five civilians rescued by troops of his battalion, who were being taken for investigation, in Yamteke town, of Borno state. Another soldier, sergeant innocent Ototo, was sentenced to life imprisonment for manslaughter. He was said to have tortured to death, a 13 year old boy, at Zabarmari area of Maiduguri, whom he said stole his phone.
